It’s All About The Fabric! – Aug. 2021

Sunday 1st August 2021

Hello Everyone,

I hope you’re all enjoying the Summer Holidays. For this month’s blog, I thought I’d give you a quick round-up of all the newest fabric ranges to arrive at Sew-Drops, as well as those which are due to arrive very soon.

NEW IN! Christmas has come early with Lewis & Irene’s Keep Believing Collection, now in stock! As many of you will probably know by now, this collection is a sequel to the overwhelmingly popular ‘Tomten’s Christmas’ and Lewis & Irene’s second collaboration with talented illustrator, Eva Melhuish. We’ve got all new printed fabrics (plus bumbleberries fabrics), and brand new panels to make your very own bunting, cushions, placemats, and advent calendar. As an extra bonus, Lewis & Irene have also brought back the extremely popular 5” squares panel from last year’s range!

We’ve recently had another new arrival for Moda Fabrics. From Robin Pickens’ ‘Thatched’ Collection, the ‘OCEAN’ fabric bolt is now available, along with ‘Fuchsia’, ‘Apricot’, ‘Honeycomb’, ‘Olive’, and ‘Chocolate Bar’. Now, we cannot confirm when exactly the remaining 11 x colours for the Bella Solids (x5) and Thatched (x6) collections will arrive, but they are now likely to come between the months of September and October 2021 – although some colours may arrive sooner, so be sure to keep checking our website and social media for any further updates.

Two collections which were due to arrive at the end of July 2021 were ‘Birds & Bobbins’ and ‘Christmas Critters’ from Craft Cotton Company. However, due to a slight shipment delay, these ranges are now expected to arrive in mid. August 2021. Fingers crossed they do. Along with these, we will be welcoming two more fabric collections to our website later in the month. The first will be Susybee Fabrics ‘Sweet Bees’ Collection; designed by Susy Bleasby and produced by Clothworks Fabrics, this range will feature 8 x bee-utiful fabrics, including 2 x panels. The second is Lewis & Irene’s ‘Country Life (Reloved)’; one of the company’s bestselling collections is making a comeback and is set to be even better than the original – featuring an array of countryside wildlife and nature, this will be Lewis & Irene’s first ever “Reloved-themed” collection.

While we wait for all those new fabric collections to arrive, we’ve started our SUMMER SALE! For the whole of August 2021, treat yourself to some fabric bargains, featuring collections by Liberty, Lewis & Irene, Free Spirit Fabrics, Windham, and In the Beginning Fabrics! Offer ends 31st August 2021.

Now, if you read my last blog, you may remember me saying that I was going to have a go at some dressmaking. Well, I have a slight confession to make…I haven’t actually got round to doing the dressmaking project yet. I’m so sorry, but I do have some good reasons why I haven’t started: –

Reason No. 1 – I’ve been very busy over the last month doing what I call “business-stuff”, in particular, preparing for all the new fabric arrivals, plus getting everything ready for our 12 Days of Christmas in July (check out our social media for those).

Reason No. 2 – I think we can all agree that the 2nd and 3rd weeks of July were INCREDIBLY hot in the UK, I just don’t think it was very productive weather for sewing or crafting at all e.g. one evening I was finishing off some hand embroidery, and I had a lot of trouble gripping my needle and thread because my hands were so sweaty.

There is a bit of good news though. Even though I haven’t finished (or technically started) the project, I have managed to cut out my fabric. All I need to do now is create my paper pattern, and then I can get started on sewing it all together. Hopefully, I will have it done in time for next month’s blog, but I may update this blog at a later date if I finish it earlier. Wish me luck.

UPDATE (09/08/2021): So, here is my completed dressmaking project; a Simple Box Top. As a complete beginner to dressmaking, I highly recommend this project to anyone looking to learn the basics of making a simple box top, as well as learning how to draw your very own paper pattern. I will admit that I had a few “issues” whilst putting this together e.g. I had to scrap my first attempt as my original measurements were not quite right (the top was so small, it wouldn’t have even fit a child, let alone a fully grown adult), but thankfully, after fixing the measurements, my second attempt turned out a lot better. It may look a little wide on the coat hanger, I could’ve done with a mannequin, but it’s actually a size 10 (UK) – trust me, I tried it on myself. ?

Overall, I really enjoyed challenging myself to try something new. Hopefully I’ll give this another go in the future and possibly try to create a top with inserted sleeves (as that’s more my style of clothing). If you would like to have a go at this project, it’s from Debbie Shore’s Half Yard Sewing Club.

Finally, before I finish, I’d like to reveal the names of the next 2 x collections which will be arriving in Autumn 2021: –

– Craft Cotton Company’s V&A William Morris ‘Winterberry’ Collection

– Tilda Fabrics ‘Windy Days’ Collection

You’ll be able to view both of these collections in our ‘COMING SOON’ section from early Sept. 2021

Thank you all so much for reading this month’s blog. I’ll be back in September with more news/updates on the sewing and crafting products that will be arriving at Sew-Drops! ?

Best Wishes,
Rebecca x
